The death of an old woman brings her daughters and grandchildren to her country house, where memories plague the young woman who inherited it.

Katharina Hagemann's novel of the same name, about three women over three generations who lived in a family home in the countryside of northern Germany, was rife with kitsch. After a love affair goes wrong, all the apples in the garden freeze. When the feelings of the main characters warm up, the blossoms in the garden burst open – twice in one year. Some readers found this a bit over the top, but for millions of others it was like warm apple pie slathered with cream.

Experienced director Vivian Naefe turns the novel into a feel-good movie for adult women, even though her previous specialty was flicks for teenage girls in mid-puberty. Her Wilde Hühner trilogy was balanced and comfortable, but painless and free of conflict – perfect for adolescence. Der Geschmack von Apfelkernen shows an increase in expectations, which the filmmaker from Hamburg masters convincingly, if conventionally.
