Mia is a gifted 17-year-old cellist. In one fraction of a second, in the midst of a snowy forest, the family car she’s in skids off the road. When she “wakes up”, her body is in a coma surrounded by EMTs. You have to pinch yourself to believe it: an introverted adolescent, a brilliant cellist, with perfect hipster punk parents and in love with the perfect boy at school who says things like: “The you you are now is the same you I was in love with yesterday.” Adapted from the young adult novel by Gayle Forman, in the style of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, If I Stay pushes the boundaries of Hollywood idiocy. The supernatural aspect of the story is neglected by the director in favor of pure melodrama, with a plastic central character played more or less convincingly by Chloé Grace Moretz - who is obviously incapable of sniffing out a good script. The whole thing is nothing but a flimsy pretext for rolling out a slew of rambling memories as uninspiring as a Nutella ad. There is neither imagination nor consistency in this incredibly dumb love story that’s so bad it’s funny.
