Captain Fantastic
In the remote forests of the Pacific Northwest, a devoted father raises his six children far from capitalist society and the modern world. Determined to prepare them to face the harsh reality of life, he teaches them to fight, hunt, and survive in the wild, while giving them a rigorous, politicized education. But when his wife gets sick, has to go to a hospital far away and then dies, he decides to take his children to her funeral at the other end of the country. It becomes a journey full of pitfalls, because the kids have no idea what really goes on in the real world ...
An American independent film par excellence: an off-beat, marginalized family on the road in a hippie van, the questioning of the American dream, and a prestigious actor (Viggo Mortensen) leading the adventure. Winner of the award for best director at Un Certain Regard in Cannes, Captain Fantastic by Matt Ross has all the ingredients to satisfy audiences, and for good reason. It is perfectly calibrated and framed, offering a great American adventure that is at turns funny and melancholy. The movie is so well executed and slick that it leaves you with a sense of déjà vu.
