Kong: Skull Island
1973. As the United States finally withdraws its army from Vietnam, Bill Randa, the head of an organization specializing in the search for extraordinary life forms, succeeds in persuading the government to send him to an unexplored island in the Pacific Ocean. He arrives there with a former soldier recruited for his abilities to survive in a hostile environment, a war photographer, and a group of armed soldiers who have just returned from the war. They begin to explore an island dominated by a variety of incredible and dangerous species...
Kong is back. 12 years after the spectacular remake by Peter Jackson with Naomi Watts, Hollywood has found a new excuse to bring the giant ape back for a big flick: the story precedes the other movies, with the mysterious island being discovered with the intention of preparing a future King Kong vs. Godzilla. The result is a prequel that is content to repeat the usual formula, with a group of unknowing people lost in a nightmare inhabited by monstrous beasts. Known for the very good Kings of Summer, Jordan Vogt-Roberts meets his ambitions, with an adventure rich in beautiful colors and particular care given to framing and sets. He is also surrounded by a first class cast (Tom Hiddleston, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly) that draws the audience in. It’s too bad that the awkwardly simplistic screenplay plays against him. Despite some colossal scenes and beautiful images, Kong: Skull Island is destined to be immediately forgotten.
